the news while biding my time in
Durango, and it compelled me to visit
the saloon for the first time.

From my perch at the bar, I saw a
man turn past the article in the local
bulletin announcing the great poet’s demise
without the least display of emotion.

Anguished as I was at my fellow citizen’s
near-total indifference to the loss our nation
had suffered, I gave an impromptu reading
of “Spirit That Form’d This Scene” in the
street outside, and only barely avoided arrest.

Deciding that I’d rather grieve alone,
I left Durango the following day.
