  • 1853 - Levi Strauss & Co begins in San Francisco, California
  • 1855 - Leaves of Grass published
  • 1857 - Wreck of the SS Central America (Sept 3) (meets survivor 30 yrs later)
  • 1865 - Civil War ended
  • 1884 - Leaves of Grass edition which was gifted to GOIV
  • 1890 - Ear Inn postcard postmark (Feb 8)
  • 1892 - Rochester Hotel built; GOIV refers to it as "a newer establishment"
  • 1892 - Walt Whitman dies on March 26, 1892 - GOIV hears the news in Durango
  • 1893 - GOIV attends the groundbreaking of the Music Concourse in San Francisco on August 24. [1]
  • 1893 - Nathan Strauss commits suicide on October 25 and dies at Chambers Street Hospital at 12:12 P.M.[2][3]
  • 1896 - GOIV disappearance
